Industrial Mechanical Estimator

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Industrial Estimator on behalf of our client, an established engineering business delivering complex mechanical and industrial projects for customers across a range of sectors.

Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of secured and prospective work, our client is looking to strengthen their commercial and estimating capability with the appointment of an experienced Mechanical Industrial Estimator.

This is an excellent opportunity for an estimator with a strong mechanical engineering background who understands the full tendering process and can confidently take projects from initial enquiry and technical review through to detailed costing, commercial assessment and final tender submission.

The Role

As Mechanical Industrial Estimator, you will play a key role in securing new projects and ensuring opportunities are accurately and commercially priced.

You will be responsible for reviewing tender enquiries, drawings, specifications and associated documentation before developing comprehensive estimates covering labour, materials, plant, subcontract packages and other project costs.

Working closely with the commercial, engineering, procurement and project delivery teams, you will ensure tenders are technically compliant, commercially competitive and reflective of the resources required to successfully deliver each project.

The position will suit someone who combines strong mechanical knowledge with commercial awareness and who is comfortable working independently on estimates while collaborating with colleagues, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

* Managing mechanical and industrial tenders from initial enquiry through to final submission
* Reviewing tender documentation, technical specifications, drawings, schedules and client requirements
* Producing accurate and detailed cost estimates for mechanical engineering projects
* Undertaking material and equipment take-offs from drawings and specifications
* Calculating labour requirements, productivity rates and associated installation costs
* Preparing detailed estimates covering labour, materials, plant, equipment, subcontractors and preliminaries
* Obtaining competitive quotations from suppliers, manufacturers and subcontractors
* Analysing quotations to ensure technical and commercial compliance with tender requirements
* Identifying potential cost savings, value engineering opportunities and alternative technical solutions
* Identifying commercial and technical risks at tender stage and ensuring these are appropriately considered within the estimate
* Preparing tender clarifications, exclusions, qualifications and assumptions
* Working closely with procurement to establish accurate and competitive material and subcontract costs
* Liaising with engineering and operational teams to understand proposed construction methodologies and programme requirements
* Attending tender review meetings and presenting estimates to senior management
* Supporting client meetings, tender interviews and commercial negotiations where required
* Reviewing historical project data and completed project costs to improve the accuracy of future estimates
* Maintaining accurate tender records, cost databases and supplier information
* Supporting the commercial team with variations, additional works and project costings when required
* Completing comprehensive handovers to project and commercial teams following successful tender awards
* Developing strong relationships with clients, suppliers and subcontractors to support future opportunities

Projects

The successful candidate will ideally have experience estimating mechanical packages within industrial environments.

Depending on your background, this could include projects involving:

* Industrial pipework and process piping
* Mechanical plant and equipment installation
* Pumps, valves and associated systems
* Fabrication and installation
* Structural and mechanical support systems
* HVAC and building services within industrial environments
* Process systems and utilities
* Plant upgrades and modifications
* Planned shutdown and maintenance projects
* Mechanical installation packages
* Manufacturing and production facilities
* Energy and infrastructure projects

Experience across all of these areas is not essential. Our client is particularly interested in candidates who have a solid understanding of mechanical engineering and can demonstrate experience producing detailed and commercially robust estimates.

About You

To be considered for this opportunity, you will ideally have previous experience working as a Mechanical Estimator, Industrial Estimator, Mandamp;E Estimator, Mechanical Project Engineer, Quantity Surveyor with a mechanical background, or within a similar commercial engineering position.

You should have a strong understanding of how mechanical projects are constructed and delivered, enabling you to accurately assess labour, materials, equipment and project requirements.

You will ideally be able to demonstrate:

* Previous mechanical or industrial estimating experience
* Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering and installation activities
* Experience producing detailed estimates and tender submissions
* The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical documentation
* Experience completing material take-offs and labour assessments
* Good understanding of supplier and subcontractor procurement
* Commercial awareness and an understanding of project margins, risk and profitability
* Confidence communicating with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders
* Strong numerical and analytical skills
* Excellent attention to detail
* The ability to manage multiple tenders and competing deadlines
* Strong IT skills and experience using Microsoft Excel and relevant estimating software
* A proactive and methodical approach to tendering and problem-solving

A formal qualification within Mechanical Engineering, Building Services, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline would be advantageous, although relevant industry experience will also be considered.
