For the past 12 months, Building Careers UK has been working alongside OnPointTRAC to help people take their first steps into the construction industry. It's been a partnership built on a shared belief: that with the right support, guidance, and opportunities, anyone can build a rewarding career in construction.
OnPointTRAC works with people who need extra support—whether that's because of long-term unemployment, health issues, caring responsibilities, or other barriers to work. They work with service users providing training and support and vital accreditations such as CSCS cards, to get them job ready, with more emphasis on hands on experience as opposed to classroom-based learning.
Over the past year, we've delivered regular sessions at OnPointTRAC, working with people who are looking to start or restart their careers in construction. Our support has covered everything from the basics to the specifics—because getting into construction isn't just about having the skills, it's about knowing how to present yourself, understanding what employers are looking for, and having the right credentials.
Our sessions have included:
Construction is one of the UK's biggest employers, but it can feel like a closed door if you don't know where to start. The industry has its own language, its own qualifications, and its own way of doing things. For someone who's been out of work, changing careers, or facing other challenges, that can feel overwhelming.
That's where partnerships like ours with OnPointTRAC make a real difference. OnPointTRAC helps people get ready for work and we help connect them to actual jobs. It's that combination of personal support and practical opportunities that makes the difference.
Over the past 12 months, we've worked with around 50 people through this partnership. Some have come to us with construction experience but needing help to get back into the industry. Others have been complete beginners, exploring whether construction might be right for them. Each person's journey has been different, but they've all benefited from having access to expert guidance and real opportunities.
We're committed to continuing this partnership with OnPointTRAC for the long term. The construction industry still faces significant skills shortages, and we know there are talented people out there who could thrive in our sector—they just need the right support to get started.
If you're an employer in the construction sector and you're interested in working with us to provide opportunities for people coming through programmes like OnPointTRAC, we'd love to hear from you. These partnerships only work when employers are willing to give people a chance, and we're always looking for companies that share our values.
And if you're someone interested in exploring a career in construction, get in touch. We're here to help!
